Sail your way to The Trafford Centre

Shopper Charlotte Thomas writes about her experience aboard the new festive canalboat shopping trips organised by Walks & Water...

Barton Square from above.

I’m a regular visitor to The Trafford Centre, whether shopping on my own, or with my daughter, or out on date night with my husband. Like millions of us each year, I always just drive, as there’s free parking and it’s so handy. But when I heard about a cruise to the centre, I thought I’ve got to give this a try - and what a great day out it was!

I’d picked up a Walks & Water brochure from the Tourist Information Centre at The Quays, and saw the cruises to The Trafford Centre and thought they looked interesting. So after I’d rounded up my equally shop-a-holic mum, and tempted my Dad with a trip on the Bridgewater Canal, I booked the tickets.

There was me, husband, 4 year old daughter and my parents who stepped onto the boat in the heart of Worsley village, ready for the trip. Having been a local resident for about ten years now, I really should have been on the Bridgewater Canal before, but a tad embarrassed that I hadn’t.

And whilst I was aware of some of the history of Worsley, have to say I wasn’t fully aware of the significance of the canal and the area during the Industrial Revolution.

Shopping

We set sail from Worsley with our fellow passengers onboard the Bridgewater Heritage Boat Company narrowboat, ‘Castlefield’ en route to The Trafford Centre, and what I was expecting to be a fun afternoon on the water, with a bit of shopping thrown in, turned out to be much more.

Worsley village and surrounding architecture near the canal look even more impressive from the water and Mark, our captain and guide for the day, gave us a running commentary of what we could see. This included links to the industrial revolution, a pretty Green, a clock that strikes 13, an impressive dry dock and the sheer scale of the job of actually building the canal.

From Worsley we sailed on towards Monton, passing a Lighthouse by the side of the canal, which came as a bit of a surprise to us all really (we’re 30 miles from the coast!). After Monton it was on to Patricroft and Barton before heading towards the Barton Aqueduct.

Being a local, this should have been something I knew more about, but alas again I’ll have to 'fess up to being unaware of the significance of the Barton Aqueduct! Its funny describing something as ‘World famous’ when you pass it regularly, but apparently it really is! The original, built way back in 1761 (thanks Mark!) was considered a true marvel of the industrial age, as the first example of water travelling over water. Have to say, without being some sort of heritage buff, it was pretty impressive being in a boat on a bridge over more water...

Barton Square

The Traditional Victorian Carousel in Barton Square

Over the Aqueduct and we were in Trafford and within site of our destination and my shopping mecca The Trafford Centre. We moored on the banks of the canal at the back of Barton Square, we were met by a lovely man from the Trafford Centre, complete in his top hat and tails. After collecting a ‘Little Red Book of Treats’ full of offers (Thank you very much TTC!) it was a short walk from the boat to the centre of Barton Square.

After the relatively sedate cruise, there was some serious shopping to be done and some festive fun to be had. And for the next 3 hours, we didn’t stop. I headed over the bridge to the centre and picked up some pressies for the inlaws with Mum, whilst Husband, Dad and Daughter popped into Santa’s Grotto for a visit with the big man himself.

We then met up for a spin on the carousel, which was fab. It was one of those real traditional Victorian ones, which brought out the kid in all of us, Dad included! After that it was time for a breather and we sat down for a hot chocolate, some food and the obligatory festive mulled wine (another reason to sail, rather than drive!) My daughter then whisked us off to the now famous Trafford Centre bears for a jolly recital of some of her favourite Christmas songs and another spin on the carousel.

Festive cheer

LEGO christmas treeFinally, we hit a few more shops at Barton Square (thanks for the great new Christmas decorations M&S!) before heading back to the boat. We set sail for Worsley once more full of food, shopping, Christmas cheer and more tales from our captain Mark.

So, as I said at the start, this turned out to be a great day, with loads to do to keep my whole family entertained. After our trip, I think this will turn into a real annual Thomas family Christmas tradition.

Definitely worth a go for a family day out with a difference and a new way to experience The Trafford Centre. Where else can you experience the Industrial Revolution and have a shopping revolution in the same day out?

Forever 21 launches at The Trafford Centre

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I was invited to the opening of Forever 21 - but I definitely wasn’t expecting what I saw.

To find the store, all I had to do was follow the queue snaking from the entrance, up the stairs, round the corner and down the middle of The Trafford Centre. This was at 8.30am.

Then, when I stepped into the shop, between the gap of the shutters and the floor, I was greeted by bright lights, white pillars, floor to ceiling mirrors and chandeliers. Everything was so dazzling and white and new, it was beautiful. Untouched loveliness.

f21 launchThe layout works like so; in the right hand corner was the ‘rocky’ corner, studded collars, leather skirts and striped jeans (this was my favourite section), then you move into the pretty dresses, floaty skirts and blouses, lace kimonos and tops followed after that, festival fashions followed that, then the eveningwear.

Then you move on into shoes, then to bags, jewellery and then you finish off in pyjamas and lingerie (which is all lit in pink - so pretty.)

Some people had been waiting since 3am, some had slept in the car park and some had travelled from Sheffield and Liverpool just to get some of their F21 fix.

Lucy, 17, from Warrington, had visited the Abu Dhabi store and already owned clothes from the brand. She described the retailer as, “Good quality, like H&M but with more of a variety.” Whereas Amy, Jodie and Stevie from Manchester thought it was the ‘American Topshop’.

Many people queuing had heard of the brand and had visited stores across the UK and Ireland, America and the U.A.E and were loyal customers - while others had only just heard of the company and were quickly browsing the online store before the opening.

Rumours

f21 launchGoing from group to group, different people told me various rumours they had heard about the opening and what would be happening. And at ten o’clock we found out. The shutters went up and the noise erupted. As I type this, I can still hear the sound of clapping and chanting of FOREVER, FOREVER! The queue surged forward as staff cheered the customers in. Giftcards varying from £10 to £210 were dispatched at the door to the first 300 people, which ran out in no time and pink balloons, ribbons and streamers floated around the customers heads.

I caught the first customer with a Forever 21 bag just 5 minutes after the shop had opened, who had been let out by her manager to queue at 8am and shop. She was rushing back to work when I caught her, happy in her triumph.

As it was the launch day, I was fortunate enough to meet the marketing director of the brand, Linda Chang, who had flown in from L.A to oversee the London store reopening and the opening of The Trafford Centre store. I asked Linda the burning questions of the brand I had heard so much about, but never seen (apart from online).

HJ: Do you usually get this many people at a store opening?!

LC: In America, literally thousands of people queue, they start camping out the night before! This is good, it means we’re raising awareness in the U.K. People have heard of us, they want to see what we’re about. I didn’t realise how big the queue was at first, I’m so happy so many people have turned up!

HJ: What has the reception been like in the U.K for Forever 21 so far?

LC: Fantastic! We opened our first U.K store in 2010 and we have plans to open more soon. I’ve just come straight from London where we’ve reopened the store there. In August we’re opening a store in Bluewater and one in Lakeside at the beginning of 2013. It’s great that’s its going so well!

HJ: I heard that F21 were scouting out locations in Sydney and Melbourne recently, are there plans to open there?

LC: It’s something we’re definitely looking at, it’s a great opportunity and something we’ve considered.

HJ: Who would you say are your main competitors here in the U.K?

Topshop and Primark. We’re fashion forward but affordable and also quite unique I think.

HJ: Describe a F21 customer in 5 words.

LC: Oooh, I’d say, trendy, daring, individual, and, this isn’t a word but someone who looks for value and lastly, I guess I’d say fun.

HJ: Is the customer base in the U.K different to the one you have in the U.S?

f21 launchLC: Sometimes there are differences. You know that the U.K style and U.S style can vary anyway, but I think the same sort of people shop in Forever 21 in the U.S as they do in the U.K. They’re looking for good quality, fashionable pieces at prices they can afford. Everyone wants the same thing.

HJ: I read American Teen Vogue as a teenager, where F21 is always mentioned or shown, but here you’re mentioned more in the weekly magazines like More and Look, which I think are targeted at older readers. Have you noticed a difference in age in the customers in the U.K and the U.S?

LC: We have concessions within F21 which target different ages, like Love 21 for example is for 30+. But the high street in the U.K is a lot bigger than in the U.S, you guys are all about high street! And the high street is for any age.

HJ: You’ve collaborated with designers before, are there any plans for more in the future?

LC: Yes definitely. But we want something different you know, something unique, something that will stand out.

HJ: Finally, is there something for you whatever your style at F21?

LC: Yeah! We have a something for everyone. Come down and see!

f21 launchGoody bag

I received a goody bag of F21 pyjamas, a top, make-up, a clutch bag and a bracelet. I was then taken on a tour of the store and was told of the stock coming in soon for A/W (keep your eyes peeled ladies) I really CANNOT wait for some of the stuff.

I then had to rush off to work, but, of course, not before I queued in the mile long queue that zigzagged around the whole of store for one of the studded collared tops I’d laid my eyes on the second I walked in and some rings to match.

Unique

I’ve still got my eye on a few things though so I feel there’ll be a few more visits in the weeks to come. Ooh and a tip for you if you’re planning a F21 trip; if you see something you like, BUY IT! I’m told that whatever is out on the shopfloor is all they have and once it’s gone its gone. So in a sense it IS unique.

Fear not though, deliveries of new stock are daily! In all seriousness though, if you do get a chance, pop in, Linda (yes, first names terms!) was not wrong; there really is something for everyone.

Coffee and cake the Nutter way

THE stunning new Nespresso boutique at The Trafford Centre has opened - and to celebrate, multi-award-winning local chef Andrew Nutter has designed a bespoke menu of savoury and sweet dishes to be paired with Nespresso’s premium Grand Cru coffee.

The Nespresso store on upper Peel Avenue is a unique retail experience,  which immerses shoppers in an indulgent, multi-sensorial space where they can discover the entire Nespresso product range whilst enhancing their own coffee expertise.

Nespresso Store

And by drawing on the rich culinary heritage of the North West and inspired by the brand’s luxurious collection of 16 Grand Crus, Andrew has created a series of beautifully designed dishes to ensure the Art of the Espresso meets the Art of Northern Cuisine.

The menu is crowned with the signature dish we present here – the Nespresso Eccles Cake, the ultimate twist on a Manchester classic which was invented just a stone's throw away from The Trafford Centre.

Containing four shots of espresso,, this traditional treat is given a rich elegance, best complimented with a shot of Nespresso’s Ristretto Grand Cru to match the cake’s coffee-enhanced, fruit-based flavours.

The dishes allow coffee lovers to discover the Grand Crus’ distinct notes and aromas with a menu which can be created at home and expertly matched with pairings endorsed by Nespresso’s coffee experts.

Nespresso Store

Andrew Nutter explained: “Coffee has the same range of individual notes and aromas as wine, so why not pair it with food? These recipes are easy to make at home but provide coffee lovers like me with a fun way to experience all the coffees available. Like the signature dish: there’s nowt more to Manchester than its Eccles Cakes but in my recipe it takes on new meaning as the Nespresso Ristretto Grand Cru gives it a chic, espresso kick!”

MB NavigationsFragrance has always been at the heart of what Molton Brown does. It’s what makes their shower gels and candles famous. Now they've channelled that experience into five new artisan perfumes. Each scent conjuring up a different mood.

The floriental-spicy scent of IUNU (30° 12’N, 31° 32’E) starts the journey, transporting the mind to the Nile, echoing strength, power, seduction and majesty with its lead ingredient, Egyptian white jasmine, giving an elegant opulence.

LIJIANG (25° 16’N, 110° 16’E) leads to China, with its floral-musky scent capturing the light, delicate softness of silk and crisp tea. Its lead ingredient, osmanthus absolute, brings a fresh delicacy and sophistication to the fragrance.

Tropical

Next to Indonesia with SINGOSARI (07° 91’S, 112° 65’E), drawing its inspiration from the beauty of the spices and memories of tropical weather, with patchouli perfectly capturing the essence of the country, producing a spicy-woody scent.

The journey continues to England for trading with APULDRE (51° 02’N, 0° 47’E) which, through its lead ingredient of juniper berry, conjures images of green lawns, English mischief and gin & tonics, perfectly capturing its green-aromatic quality.

The journey ends in the New World, Canada, with ROGART (45° 33’N, 63° 9’W) a juxtaposition of continental ices and heat, civilization and wilderness with fir balsam and maple making up its woody-fresh scent, inspiring the warm feeling of being inside, with the cold weather outside.

Lollicakes hit our sweet spot

THE talented team at Lollicakes in Didsbury has caught our eye recently, with their mouth-watering confections on a stick.

Lollicakes girlTheir novel idea is to create dinky little cakes that sit atop a lolly stick, allowing for all manner of creativity in the kitchen, as well as in the shop window where these fabulous Lollicake displays were found.

Lollicakes co-owner Laura Drabble, who now stocks exclusively at Selfridges at The Trafford Centre, said: "There’s no denying that the Americans know what they're doing when it comes to cake, after all, isn't it thanks to Carrie Bradshaw visiting New York's Magnolia Bakery that the cupcake is as famous as it is today?

Big Apple

"It's no surprise then that when I discovered these little creations on a trip to the Big Apple we couldn’t wait to introduce them to our friends in the UK. Whether you know them as lollicakes or cake pops the verdict is the same – they taste amazing!"

Each and every lollicake is hand made using their rich, mouth-watering chocolate cake. This is blended with creamy chocolate frosting, dipped in your choice of dark, white or milk chocolate and hand painted or decorated in a variety of pretty sprinkles and glitter.

Weddings

It’s not quite a cake, not just a truffle – you really do have to try one! The designers say cake pops are perfect for many occasions, particularly weddings, hen do’s and kids parties.

The pops have gone down a storm at The Trafford Centre, especially the Royal Wedding themed pops, and seasonal Easter variations.

But who knows what summer wardrobe these stylish little treats will be wearing?

  • Take a look at our selection of designer Lollicakes in our gallery.
  • Read more about Lollicakes at their website.

How to be a savvy sale shopper

There's an incredible pleasure in getting a gorgeous pair of stilettos for half the price and The Trafford Centre sales offer guilty pleasures in abundance.

When tackling the sales there is a certain art to ensuring you stay ahead of the pack and walk away with a bargain (or two!). This is the art of the savvy sale shopper.

But how do you do this we hear you ask? Well no one is born with the gift it comes from experience and advice! When bargain hunting you need to have the right attitude, being spontaneous is a must, put your sales head on, know what you’re after, and know what the best deals are. So take a look at our quirky guide below, which will help you on your way to becoming the most glamorous and well-informed sales shopper.

Get your rest!

Comfy and stylish from Warehouse

Firstly it is crucial to rest the night before, take some time to yourself; have a relaxing bubble bath before your day of sales shopping and take time to pick out your most stylish, yet comfortable outfit to allow you to make the most of your day. Although those killer heels are gorgeous, they are not appropriate for sales shopping; think comfortable flats… however don’t compromise your style!

Now it’s time to plan your route!

The malls

No it’s not a race, but planning which stores are on your hit list will allow you to stay focussed and eliminate any unnecessary stress on the day. Download a mall guide to make sure you know your favourite shops and the layout of the Centre.

Do your research!

One mistake that people make is buying for buying’s sake and they don’t do their homework! Work out what you have and what you need. Our little secret is that we believe the key to successful sale shopping is to buy investment pieces, or an item that will carry you across into the next season. Take a look at our best buys and handy hints with our top 10 best buys for him and for her.

Consider the sale as a sport!

No, we don’t mean rugby tackling someone to the ground to get that gorgeous jumpsuit. But it could be great team work, ask your trusted friends to come along and have fun rummaging through the sales racks, spotting items for each other. Honest friends are always good to take along, as a quick pick needs a truthful opinion knowing whether something suits you or not.

Remember to refuel!

Also just like a sport, plan a half time… a coffee break to refuel is always a necessity and re-charge your batteries ready for the second half.

… Happy shopping!
